The Front to Defend Egypt Protestors documented the government crackdown on demonstrators via controlling the flow of information through online platforms and communications means, through the Ministry of Communication and Technology in Egypt in cooperation with telecommunication companies Vodafone, Mobinil and Etisalat.
The following took place:
1. Blocking several websites and online platforms among them: Facebook.com, Twitter.com and Bambuser.com, starting 25 January 2011. As well as blocking newspapers websites among them: elBadil.net and Dostor.org
2. Suspending several phone lines of activists and the hotline numbers of the Front to Defend Egypt Protestors, starting 25 January 2011.
3. Short Message Service was shutdown starting 27 January 2011.
Member of FDEP called customer services of Vodafone, Mobinil and Etisalat, and the answer we got was “security reasons” and “we choose specific customers to disable the services from them”.
