Tahrir Sit in Forcefully Dismantled and Dozens Detained

FDEP was informed that military forces have this afternoon, 9 March, forcefully dismantled the Tahrir sit after coordination with a number of thugs to tear down the tents used by the protesters. Military police and army offices have randomly arrested dozens of the protesters before they were able to escape the square.

According to eyewitnesses, a number of thugs carrying banners in support of the ruling party and state security intelligence harassed the protesters before they started throwing stones at them. Later the army intervened separating thugs from protesters, during which time thugs attacked the protesters, broke the tents and arrested a few. Eyewitnesses added that army forces detained most of Tahrir protesters as well as continued the tearing down of the tents. Military police officers have forced an individual carrying a camera to delete its memory card. In some cases the officers destroyed the memory card themselves.

Detainees were kept inside the Egyptian museum and in one of the Arab Contractors' garages. FDEP was informed that detainees in the Egyptian museum were attacked by batons and electric rods.

Military police forces also prevented FDEP lawyers from accessing the museum and meeting with the detained. Lawyers were threatened with arrest if they don't leave.

FDEP is currently compiling the names of the detainees and preparing lawyers to attend in case they are referred to military prosecution.
